Bob, I tried to e-mail you but the link did not work for me. I encountered the same problem with my Savage and found the same solution you did. Mine is a '98 with 2000 miles on it. I replaced the petcock ($85 USD) and it has not reoccurred. However, I believe the problem is in the vacuum diaphram located in the back of the petcock that is activated by the vacuum from the carb.
